If you’ve ever watched the TV show ”Intervention” you might have misconceptions about how to get your loved one to accept treatment. Those “old school” interventions with the element of surprise, confrontation, and ultimatums rarely work. Unless an individual recognises they have a problem, and sincerely wants help- they can’t be coaxed or threatened into seeking help.
A better way is for the family to express their love and concerns during a Family Meeting (sometimes called an Invitational Intervention).
NO BIG SURPRISES – NO AMBUSH
A unique type of a Family Meeting is a “DINNERVENTION.” A “Dinnervention” is a casual family gathering in the comfort of the family home. Sometimes the family shares a meal, followed by a candid discussion. I will be there to facilitate the conversation, guide the topic to insure everyone is heard, and understand, and to present treatment options while offering referrals and resources. This is not a “one and done” , deal. Sometimes, there has to be several “Dinnerventions.”
